I currently own a rotating composter, which I am not happy with. I am considering purchasing the Earthmaker. My question to you is concerning placement of the composter. I would like to place it outside my kitchen door on a tiled surface. Does this work and what are the chances of vermin entering the composter? Is it sealed so that no rats and such could enter the composter? Thanks for addressing my concerns,
Thanks for your enquiry. It's good to site the Earthmaker near the kitchen door so you can regularly throw in your organic waste, however we would not recommend you place it on tiles if they are cemented or sealed. When organic waste decomposes it produces some small amounts of leachate, liquid, which needs to drain to soil. Our User Guide recommends you site the Earthmaker on bricks, paving, tiles, decking etc where leachate can drain through. And when sited as recommended, rats will find it impossible to burrow up into the Earthmaker. Hope we have been of help,

I've recently bought the Earthmaker and have put it together in accordance with the instructions. All is fine but, I'm a bit confused about how long it should be before I drop the fill from the the top container into the middle chamber. Is it 4 weeks after starting to fill the top chamber or 4 weeks after the top chamber is full ? At the moment, after one week, the top chamber although topped up regularly seems to reduce quite quikly.
Hello Robin, thanks for investing in an Earthmaker. The transit time through your Earthmaker will depend on the climate and also the volume and type of waste you are composting. Organic material decomposes fast in the summer that's why the top chamber seems to reduce quite quickly. When it's warm you should be moving material down the chambers every 4 weeks or so. During the colder months, when you have less garden waste to compost, you can leave material to sit for longer in the top chamber. So now in August, we would recommend you empty the top chamber a month after you started filling. Hope this helps,

This easy to assemble composter replaced an ugly home-built one and is so much cleaner and attractive. It took me a bit of time to recognise that compostibles should be layered and not put in in great lumps but the resulting compost comes much quicker than our old method and is good quality.

Is the earthmaker manufactured in the UK? I noticed that the idea originates from New Zeland - surely its not environmentally friendly to ship these in from outside the UK?
Earthmaker was invented and is produced in New Zealand. The energy cost to ship them from New Zealand by sea is less than might be needed to transport them from a European factory by road, so we don't consider off-shore manufacturing to be 'not environmentally-friendly'

Very quick and efficent delivery service. The assembly instructions were very easy to follow and the earthmaker went together without any hassle. Now it is part of our every day life as we compost almost everything eggshells, raw veg peelings, fruit, teabags, coffee grinds, shredded paper and not forgetting the garden waste, thus resulting in natural compost to use back in the garden. So in doing this it also helps to cut down on rubbish going to landfil sites. This is an excellant piece of garden equipment. A big thank you to Earthmaker well done to all for designing this magnificent composter.

We set up the 'earthmaker'late last year and filled it with scraps of everything. A week ago we checked it and found an excellent supply of compost ready for the garden. We can certainly recommend this composter.

About a year ago, we were inspired by TV3's show 'Wasted' to start thinking about ways to reduce our rubbish & recycle. We came across Earthmaker whilst doing some net research into composting, and liked what we read on the site, it just seemed to make sense how they did it. We duly purchased an Earthmaker kit and quickly got it set up and going (assembly was simplicity itself). The results were noticeable straight away. Prior to starting up with Earthmaker, we had at least two bags of household rubbish going out for collection each week. This is now down to one every week, and some weeks there are none. That's 52 less bags of rubbish to the landfill! Everything than can go into the Earthmaker does, and what can go in is surprising. Not just the usual fruit & veggie waste, but some papers, eggshells, tea bags and coffee grinds. It can also happily swallow two to three full catchers of lawn clippings. The organic waste breaks down quickly & efficiently, and following the instructions to keep it cycling over work really well. We are extremely happy with our Earthmaker, and would unhesitatingly recommend it to anyone.
